Nexii’s revolutionary construction technology reduces on-site construction waste to near-zero, reduces carbon emissions of buildings, and accelerates build times

Vancouver/ Traditional Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations – Canadian green construction technology company, Nexii Building Solutions Inc. (Nexii), today announced that it has constructed a first-of-its-kind sustainably built Starbucks drive thru store in Canada.

Located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, the sustainably constructed Starbucks café has been built using Nexii’s revolutionary green construction technology, which is designed to reduce the store’s carbon emissions by approximately 30%.

Nexii is able to minimize carbon emissions of buildings through two key innovations: its choice of building material and its assembly process. Nexii’s proprietary material, Nexiite – which is used within its building panels – is more thermally efficient and less carbon-intensive than concrete. In addition, when assembled the Nexii panels create an airtight building envelope. Together, this markedly improves a building’s energy efficiency and, in turn, significantly lowers the greenhouse gas emissions for ongoing building operation.

The Starbucks café’s wall and roof building panels were precision manufactured in a Nexii production facility and the onsite assembly of the airtight building envelope was completed in just six days.

Nexii also aims to tackle the construction industry’s waste problem head-on. The construction and demolition industry is one of Canada’s largest contributors to municipal solid waste, but Nexii’s innovative building solution reduces onsite waste to near-zero. Nexii is continuing to invest in research and development to eliminate waste from its processes entirely.

Gregor Robertson, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Partnerships at Nexii, said: “Creating green buildings is key to tackling our world’s climate emergency, so we’re excited to be working with Starbucks Canada as we build a new, sustainable blueprint for their stores.”

“Nexii’s construction system not only reduces waste to near-zero and reduces building carbon emissions, it also accelerates construction timelines to enable the rapid development of sustainable and affordable buildings. Nexii is proud to be working with building owners and retailers across North America to provide them with the solutions they need to significantly reduce the environmental impacts of their buildings.”

The Starbucks Abbotsford building – which features both an instore café and drive thru – is expected to open to the public in early 2021. For more information about the store, read the Starbucks press release here.
