Building Quickly and Sustainably: Nexii’s Role in Transforming Service Areas Along the New York State Thruway
Nexii played a key role in the revitalization of service areas along the New York State Thruway. As part of a major transformation, Nexii has manufactured 10 low-carbon, commercial buildings ranging from 6,400 to 14,800 square feet. These buildings, set to be operated by a global retail chain alongside other commercial and restaurant tenants, are part of an ambitious project to introduce 23 new service plazas along the Thruway by 2024.
Nexii designed and produced high-performance building envelopes that offer efficient and sustainable alternatives to traditional commercial retail spaces at rest stops. Manufactured in Hazleton, PA, the buildings were quickly assembled onsite, reducing both construction time and costs. Nexii’s panels, made from Nexiite—a groundbreaking alternative to traditional concrete—are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. This solution requires fewer resources, produces nearly zero onsite construction waste, and significantly lowers emissions throughout the building process.
Originally built in the 1950s and last upgraded in the 1990s, these service areas are in dire need of modernization. This project will not only upgrade essential infrastructure but will also provide motorists with modern food and retail options, enhanced restroom facilities, and fueling stations for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
